How it works

Your EPS pension comes from a fixed EPFO formula — two numbers decide everything:

Frequently asked questions

What is the EPS pension formula?

Monthly Pension = (Pensionable Salary × Pensionable Service) ÷ 70. Pensionable salary is the average Basic + DA of the last 60 months, capped at the wage ceiling.

What is the current EPS wage ceiling?

₹25,000 per month from 17 September 2026 (raised from ₹15,000). Only salary up to this cap counts toward your pension.

How many years of service do I need for EPS pension?

Minimum 10 years of contributory service. Below 10 years you get a withdrawal benefit, not a monthly pension.

Does my whole career salary average count?

No — only the average of the last 60 months (5 years) before exit. Your final five years matter far more than the earlier ones.

Can I start my EPS pension before 58?

Yes, from age 50 — but the pension is reduced by 4% for every year before 58. Starting at 55 means a 12% cut.

What is the 2-year service bonus?

Members retiring with 20+ years of pensionable service get 2 extra years added to the service component of the formula.

What is the minimum EPS pension?

₹1,000 per month is guaranteed. If the formula gives less, you still receive ₹1,000.

Does the higher-pension option change this?

Yes — members who opted (with employer consent) for pension on actual salary use their real salary instead of the ceiling, giving a much larger pension but a smaller EPF lump sum.

What happens to EPS if I change jobs?

Your service transfers with a Scheme Certificate (Form 10C). Keep accumulating across employers to cross the 10-year mark.

Is EPS pension taxable?

Yes — EPS pension is taxed as salary income under ‘Income from Salary’ in the year you receive it.
