F&O Trading Tax Calculator

How it works

Futures & options profits are not capital gains — the tax department treats F&O as a business. That is actually good news: your STT, brokerage, internet, data feeds, advisory fees and even a home-office share become deductible business expenses, and losses can be carried forward for 8 years.

The catch is compliance. Your turnover is the absolute total of every profit and loss added together (not just net profit), and it decides whether you need a tax audit. Cross ₹10 crore of turnover — easy for active option sellers — and an audit is mandatory.

Because F&O income is unpredictable, most traders get tripped by advance tax: if your total tax crosses ₹10,000 in a year, you must pay it in quarterly instalments or face interest under 234B/234C. Estimate generously in December and March.

Frequently asked questions

Is F&O profit capital gains or business income?

Business income (non-speculative), always. It is taxed at your slab rate — never at the 12.5%/20% capital gains rates. File ITR-3, not ITR-2.

How is F&O turnover calculated?

Add up the absolute value of every trade's profit and loss — a ₹50,000 gain and a ₹30,000 loss make ₹80,000 of turnover, not ₹20,000. Premium received on options sold also counts.

When is a tax audit mandatory for F&O?

When turnover exceeds ₹10 crore in a year, or when you declare profit below 6% of turnover while total income crosses the basic exemption limit. An audit means a CA signs off your books — budget ₹15,000–40,000.

Can I deduct expenses from F&O income?

Yes — everything genuinely for the business: brokerage, STT is not deductible but exchange charges are, data subscriptions, advisory fees, internet, depreciation on your trading computer, even proportionate rent for a home office.

What happens to F&O losses?

Non-speculative business losses offset salary? No — they offset business income and other heads except salary, and carry forward 8 years against business income only. File on time or you lose the carry-forward.

Do I need to pay advance tax on F&O?

If your total tax liability for the year exceeds ₹10,000, yes — in instalments of 15%, 45%, 75%, 100% by June, September, December and March. Miss and you pay 1% monthly interest.

Intraday equity vs F&O — taxed differently?

Yes. Intraday equity is speculative business income (losses only offset speculative gains, 4-year carry forward). F&O is non-speculative (losses offset any business income, 8-year carry forward).

Does STT paid on F&O reduce my tax?

STT itself is not deductible, but it is part of your cost base in turnover computation. Exchange transaction charges, GST on brokerage and SEBI fees are deductible as business expenses.

Can salaried people do F&O?

Yes — many do. Your salary stays under its own head; F&O goes under business income in the same return. Just keep the books clean and separate.

What records should I keep?

Broker P&L statements, contract notes, bank statements showing settlements, and bills for every claimed expense. If turnover crosses ₹10cr or audit triggers, proper books of account are legally required.
