How it works
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's single indirect tax on most goods and services, charged in slabs of 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% (plus 3% on gold and jewellery).
Adding GST (exclusive price):
GST = Base price × Rate → Total = Base + GST
Removing GST (inclusive price, e.g. an MRP):
Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate) → GST = Total − Base
- CGST + SGST: on sales within a state, the tax splits equally between Centre and State (e.g. 18% = 9% + 9%).
- IGST: on inter-state sales, the full rate goes to the Centre as one levy.
- Common slabs: 5% on essentials and restaurant food, 12% on processed food, 18% on most goods and services, 28% on luxury and sin goods.
- Businesses registered under GST can claim input tax credit on the GST they pay on purchases, so the tax doesn't cascade.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST on an amount?
Multiply the base price by the rate: GST = price × rate. A Rs 10,000 item at 18% carries Rs 1,800 GST, totalling Rs 11,800.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide by (1 + rate): base = total ÷ 1.18 for 18% GST. The GST hidden inside is total − base. A Rs 11,800 MRP at 18% contains Rs 1,800 GST on a Rs 10,000 base.
What are the GST slabs in India?
0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, plus a special 3% on gold and jewellery. Most everyday goods fall in 5–18%.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
CGST + SGST split the tax equally between Centre and State on intra-state sales. IGST is a single levy at the full rate on inter-state sales, collected by the Centre.
Is GST charged on MRP?
MRP is generally GST-inclusive — the tax is already inside the printed price. Use the "remove GST" mode to find the base price.
Can I claim back the GST I pay?
Registered businesses can claim input tax credit (ITC) on GST paid for business purchases, offsetting it against the GST they collect. End consumers cannot.
What is the GST rate on restaurants?
Standalone restaurants charge 5% without input tax credit; restaurants inside hotels with room tariffs above Rs 7,500 charge 18% with ITC.
Is there GST on gold?
Yes — 3% GST on the gold value plus 5% on making charges. This calculator includes the 3% slab option.
Do I need GST registration to charge GST?
Generally yes if your annual turnover exceeds Rs 40 lakh for goods (Rs 20 lakh for services; lower in special-category states). Below that, registration is optional.
Why do two halves (CGST/SGST) show the same amount?
On intra-state sales the law splits the headline rate equally — 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. The total tax is unchanged; it is just collected by two governments.
