How it works

Medical inflation runs 12–14% a year — roughly double CPI. A ₹5 lakh cover bought in 2020 buys about ₹2.8 lakh of 2026 healthcare. Most families are underinsured by half and discover it mid-emergency.

Size cover to your city's private hospital costs: a metro family of four with the eldest at 40+ realistically needs ₹25–50 lakh. That sounds huge until you price one cardiac procedure plus a week of ICU.

The smart structure: a base floater (₹5–10L) plus a super top-up (₹25–50L, deductible = base). Super top-ups are absurdly cheap — ₹50L of extra cover often costs less than the base ₹5L — because deductibles filter out small claims.

Frequently asked questions

How much health cover does a family need?

Metro family of 4: ₹25–50L. Tier-2: ₹15–25L. Enough for 1–2 major private-hospital procedures plus buffer. ₹5L alone is 2015 thinking.

What is a super top-up?

A high-cover policy (₹20L–₹1Cr) with a deductible (e.g. ₹5L). It pays only above the deductible — so premiums are a fraction of a full high-cover floater. Pair it with a base ₹5–10L floater.

Is corporate cover enough?

No — it ends with your job, has sub-limits, and rarely covers parents well. Treat it as a bonus, not the plan. Buy personal cover while you are young and healthy.

When should I buy?

Now. Premiums rise steeply after 45–50, pre-existing diseases get 2–4 year waiting periods, and insurers can decline older applicants. Every year you wait costs more than the premium you "save".

What are waiting periods?

Initial 30 days (except accidents), 2–4 years for pre-existing diseases, 2 years for specified procedures (cataract, hernia...). Buy before you need it — obviously.

Family floater vs individual covers?

Floater is cheaper for young families (one sum shared). Once parents cross 60, separate individual covers often work better — one big claim by a parent should not exhaust the family's cover.

What does the premium roughly cost?

₹5L floater for a 35-year-old couple + 2 kids: ~₹15,000–25,000/year. A ₹50L super top-up on top: ~₹8,000–15,000 more. Prices vary by insurer and city.

Are OPD and dental covered?

Usually not in base policies; some plans add OPD riders. Do not buy a policy for OPD — buy it for the ₹5L+ hospitalisation that would wreck your finances.

What is the claim settlement ratio?

Share of claims an insurer settles — look for 95%+ over multiple years. Also check incurred claim ratio and hospital network in YOUR city, not just the headline number.

Can I port my policy later?

Yes — portability lets you switch insurers while carrying forward waiting-period credits. Compare claim service, not just premiums, at renewal.
