IDCW vs Growth Option Comparator

How it works

IDCW (earlier "dividend option") feels like income — but every payout is carved out of your own NAV, then taxed at your slab every single year. A 6% payout at the 30% slab loses ~1.9% to tax annually, and that lost money never compounds.

Growth keeps everything invested: tax is deferred to redemption and charged at 12.5% LTCG (above ₹1.25L). The maths is brutal — on ₹5L over 5 years at 12%, Growth typically beats IDCW by ₹40,000–80,000 post-tax at the 30% slab.

Need regular cash flow? Use SWP from a Growth fund instead: you control the amount and timing, withdrawals are part capital (tax-efficient), and the rest keeps compounding untouched.

Frequently asked questions

Is IDCW payout extra return?

No — the fund's NAV falls by exactly the payout amount. It is your own money returned to you, minus tax. Total return is identical to Growth before tax.

How is IDCW taxed?

At your income slab rate in the year received, like salary. At 30% + 4% cess, a ₹60,000 payout nets you only ~₹41,300.

Why does Growth win post-tax?

Two reasons: no annual tax drag (money keeps compounding), and final gains taxed at 12.5% LTCG instead of 30%+ slab. Deferral + lower rate = big gap over time.

When does IDCW make sense?

Rarely for wealth building. It suits investors who cannot resist redeeming (forced discipline of payouts) — but an SWP does the same job more tax-efficiently.

What about IDCW in debt funds?

Worse — debt fund gains are slab-taxed anyway, and IDCW adds nothing. Growth or SWP, always.

Can I switch from IDCW to Growth?

Yes, but switching = redemption = capital gains tax on accumulated gains. Factor that exit cost before switching; sometimes staying put wins.

Is SWP really better than IDCW?

For regular income, yes: you choose the amount, part of each withdrawal is your own capital (not fully taxable), and un-withdrawn money compounds. IDCW amounts and timing are at the fund's mercy.

Do payouts affect my 1.25L LTCG exemption?

IDCW payouts are not capital gains at all — they never touch the exemption. Only Growth redemptions use the ₹1.25L annual LTCG exemption.

What did the 2020 rule change?

Before April 2020, dividends faced DDT (paid by the fund, ~11.6% effective). Now payouts are taxed in your hands at slab — worse for anyone above the 10% slab.

Should retirees use IDCW?

No — retirees should use SWP from Growth or debt funds. Same cash flow, lower tax, full control. IDCW is a psychological product, not a financial one.
