How it works

A 12% hike feels like 12% more money. It is not. The raise pushes part of your income into tax, PF deductions rise with basic pay, and what lands in your account is usually 7–9% more — sometimes less if the hike tips you into a higher slab.

The most useful number here is "tax ate of your hike". If a ₹1.44 lakh annual raise costs you ₹45,000 in extra tax, the government took 31% of your appraisal before you saw it. That reframes negotiations: a ₹20,000 NPS contribution or extra 80C deduction can be worth more than a percentage point of hike.

Also watch the rebate cliff: under the new regime, taxable income just above ₹12 lakh suddenly attracts full slab tax. A hike that crosses that line can leave you worse off than a smaller one — always check the in-hand, not the CTC.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my in-hand hike smaller than my CTC hike?

Three deductions scale with pay: income tax (often at your marginal 20–30% slab), 12% employee PF on basic, and professional tax. A 12% CTC hike typically converts to 7–9% in hand.

What is the 87A rebate cliff?

Under the new regime, taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays zero tax via rebate — but ₹12,00,001 pays full slab tax on the whole amount above ₹4 lakh. A hike crossing this line needs checking; marginal relief softens it slightly.

Does a hike increase my PF deduction?

Yes, if it raises your basic pay — employee PF is 12% of basic (+DA). That money is not lost (it earns 8.25% tax-free), but it does shrink the monthly gain you feel.

Should I negotiate a higher hike or more perks?

Tax-free perks (meal coupons, fuel, car lease, NPS contribution) can beat a raw hike: ₹50,000 as employer NPS contribution costs the company the same but lands fully in your retirement corpus, while ₹50,000 as salary loses ~30% to tax.

How accurate is the in-hand estimate?

It is a close approximation: CTC minus income tax, 12% PF and professional tax. Your actual structure — HRA exemption, LTA, special allowance — moves the exact number a few thousand either way.

Does switching regimes change my hike value?

Yes. With large 80C/HRA deductions the old regime can leave more in hand; without them the new regime wins. Compare both on your actual numbers before the appraisal is finalised.

Will a mid-year hike change my TDS?

Your employer recalculates projected annual tax and adjusts TDS for remaining months — expect noticeably lower in-hand for 1–2 months after a big mid-year hike as TDS catches up.

Is bonus taxed differently from a hike?

Bonus is fully taxable as salary in the year received, same slabs. A hike compounds every year; a bonus is one-time — ₹1 lakh as hike beats ₹1 lakh as bonus over time.

What hike beats inflation?

With ~5–6% inflation, anything under 8% is roughly flat in real terms after tax. The "real raise in hand" row shows your inflation-adjusted-feel number before inflation itself.

Can I reduce the tax on my hike?

Max 80C (₹1.5L), NPS (extra ₹50k under 80CCD(1B)), and HRA optimisation. Each ₹10,000 of deduction saves ₹3,120 at the 30% slab — often worth more than haggling for another percent.
