How it works

Absolute return flatters; XIRR tells the truth:

Frequently asked questions

What is XIRR?

Extended Internal Rate of Return — the annualized return computed from actual cash-flow dates and amounts. The standard for SIP performance.

XIRR vs absolute return?

Absolute ignores time; XIRR annualizes. A 37% absolute gain over 5 years is only ~6.5% XIRR.

XIRR vs CAGR?

CAGR suits lump sums; XIRR handles multiple cash flows (SIPs). Same idea, different math.

What is a good SIP XIRR?

Equity SIPs: 10–14% long-term is realistic; 12% is the standard planning assumption. Above 15% sustained is exceptional.

Why is my XIRR lower than fund returns?

Rupee-cost averaging: later installments buy at higher NAVs, dragging the average below the fund's point-to-point return.

Can XIRR be negative?

Yes — if current value is below invested, XIRR goes negative. Common in the first 1–2 years of equity SIPs.

How do I calculate XIRR in Excel?

=XIRR(values, dates) with negative outflows and positive final value — the precise method for irregular SIPs.

Does XIRR include dividends?

For growth plans, yes — reinvested automatically in NAV. IDCW payouts need separate accounting.

Is XIRR post-tax?

No — XIRR is pre-tax. Subtract LTCG (12.5% above Rs 1.25L for equity) for the post-tax picture.

Why do apps show different XIRRs?

Different end dates, NAV timing, and whether exit loads/expenses are included. Same-day NAV comparisons are apples-to-apples.
