How it works
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is the highest-paying small-savings scheme in India — currently 8.2% p.a., opened for a girl child below 10:
- Deposits: 15 years (Rs 250 min, Rs 1.5 lakh max per year).
- Maturity: 21 years from opening (or at her marriage after 18).
- EEE tax status: 80C deduction on deposits, tax-free interest, tax-free maturity.
- Math: yearly deposits compound annually for 21 years — Rs 1.5L/year at 8.2% grows to about Rs 71.8 lakh, of which ~Rs 49.3 lakh is tax-free interest.
- Withdrawals: 50% allowed after she turns 18 for higher education; premature closure allowed in cases like medical emergency.
- One account per girl child, maximum two accounts per family (three for twins/triplets).
